The first Evesham Festival of Music is an initiative of the ROTARY CLUB OF EVESHAM for the benefit of local musical groups and the enjoyment of the community. It is hoped this will become a regular event on the summer calendar. The Rotary Club has raised the necessary finance, has organised all the advertising and is managing and producing all the events.
Other community projects run by the Rotary Club include the Tree of Light which enables local people to remember their loved ones and raises thousands of pounds for local charities, Kids Out, in conjunction with other clubs in the district, which gives disadvantaged local youngsters a fun day out, providing Father Christmases for the Evesham Country Park to raise funds, again for local charities and the Christmas Carol Concert held each year at All Saints Church.
This year the Club has arranged for 2 local young people to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Scheme and also for 4 Rotarians to help aboard the 'Tenacious' which is a 3 masted sailing ship owned by the Jubilee Sailing Trust and gives disabled people a chance to sail. The Club has arranged for a local disabled person to have this opportunity for a week on board.
ROTARY is a service organisation whose aim is to MAKE A DIFFERENCE and serve communities in need wherever that may be, whether at international, national or local level. Rotary is instantly there, because of the worldwide spread of Clubs, at emergencies such as tsunamis or earthquakes providing Shelterboxes to enable victims of the disaster to exist until more permanent solutions can be found. Rotary has been running a successful 'Eradicate Polio in the World' campaign for several years now and is involved in many local areas of the world helping to fight disease and disadvantage and to alleviate suffering. On the international front the Rotary Club of Evesham has raised thousands of pounds to equip a new computer centre at a school in Sri Lanka which had been devastated by the Tsunami - this is an ongoing project which is overseen by both the Evesham Club and our partner club in Sri Lanka which involved one of our members visiting Sri Lanka and officially opening the centre earlier this year.
We are 'twinned' with clubs in Denmark, Germany, Holland and Norway and are currently setting up a joint aid project in Africa in partnership with a Rotary Club there which will, again, be monitored. We visit the twinned clubs on an annual basis and enjoy great hospitality and friendship.
If you feel you are a person, male or female, who would like to be involved in these sort of projects and actually 'make a difference' and would enjoy the genuine friendship and great social life offered by Rotary to its members you are warmly invited to contact either the current President Jan Harris on janaharris@btinternet.com or the Vice President Peter Wisbey on wisbeys@waitrose.com
